What the app reads
With your permission, RemWake reads two kinds of data from Apple Health:
- Heart rate. Used to help pick the moment to wake you, and to draw your morning chart.
- Sleep analysis. This is Apple's own record of when you were asleep and in which stage. It goes into your morning report and helps RemWake learn your pattern.
RemWake reads motion as well. On Apple Watch that only happens while it's watching for the moment to wake you. On iPhone it runs through the night, if that's how you've chosen to track.
RemWake writes nothing back to Apple Health. Access is read only.
Learning from your own sleep history
RemWake reads about the last two months of sleep and heart rate data already sitting in Apple Health. Most of that was recorded by your watch long before you installed the app. It uses the history to work out how often you actually stir before your alarm, which is what tells you whether a given wake window is worth setting.
All of that happens on your iPhone. Your sleep history is never uploaded. Not even if you switch on anonymous sharing below. The only thing that can ever leave your device is a night RemWake recorded itself, and only if you ask it to.
Your alarm history and morning reports are stored on your iPhone. Delete the app and they go with it.
What we collect
By default, nothing. There are no accounts, no advertising identifiers and no third-party trackers, and your sleep data isn't sent anywhere.
One setting changes that. Under Profile › Data & privacy there's a switch called Contribute anonymized data. It's off when you install the app. Turn it on and each night RemWake has analysed gets uploaded to our server, so we can make the wake detection better.
This is everything that gets sent:
- Heart rate and movement for each 30 seconds RemWake was recording. That's the whole night on iPhone, or just the wake window on Apple Watch.
- The score RemWake gave each of those moments, and Apple's sleep stage where it's available
- When the night started and ended, and how long it lasted
- Your alarm time, wake window, and whether smart wake was on
- Whether the alarm fired early or at your set time
- Your morning rating, if you gave one
- The app version, and whether the night came from an Apple Watch or an iPhone
- A random identifier generated by your installation of the app
None of this is sent: your name, email address, phone number, device name, Apple ID, location, or anything else that points to you. The random identifier is there so we can tell one person's nights from another's. It isn't linked to you, we can't work backwards from it to you, and it changes if you delete the app and install it again.
We don't sell this data. We don't share it with advertisers. We don't use it for anything except improving how RemWake picks your wake moment. Health data is never used for advertising or marketing.
Switch the setting off and nothing further is sent. Nights already uploaded can't be traced back to you, so we can't pick yours out on our own. If you want everything from your installation removed, send us the identifier shown under Profile › Data & privacy and we'll delete it.
The website
This site collects less than most, but not nothing.
If you join the waitlist, you give us your email address and, optionally, whether you wear an Apple Watch to sleep. We use those to email you about RemWake and to pick beta testers, and for nothing else. We never sell or share them. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes you off the list. The list is held by our email provider, Kit.
If you contact us through the support form or by email, we get your email address and your message, and we use them only to reply.
We don't run general analytics on this site. There are no advertising tags, and nothing here profiles you across other websites.
There is one exception, and it exists because of how creators get paid. When a creator sends someone to RemWake, we need to know the visit came from that creator so they earn their share. To do that the site loads a small script from track.remwake.com, a subdomain we control, run on our behalf by our creator platform, Trybe. It records that a visit happened, which creator link it came from, and stores an identifier so a later signup can be credited to the right person.
It has nothing to do with your sleep. That data never leaves your phone and is not connected to this in any way. If you'd rather not be counted, a tracker blocker or Safari's built-in protections will stop it and nothing on the site breaks. The app is unaffected either way.
The one outside service the site touches is Google Fonts, which supplies the typefaces. Your browser fetches those from Google, so Google sees your IP address when the page loads. We don't send them anything else.
Your rights
The app keeps nothing about you off your device, so there's no account to access, export or delete. Uninstalling removes the lot. For the waitlist, unsubscribe using the link in any email, or write to team@remwake.com and ask to be taken off. If you live somewhere with rights to access, correct or delete personal data, such as the UK, EU or California, those rights cover your waitlist email address. The same address handles the request.
Children
RemWake isn't aimed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. If the change matters, and particularly if we ever start collecting something we don't collect today, we'll say so plainly in the app and by email to the waitlist.
