Everything you need to write about RemWake. For interviews, review builds, or anything not covered here, email team@remwake.com. I answer personally and quickly.
RemWake is a smart alarm for iPhone and Apple Watch that wakes you during light sleep inside a window you choose, so mornings start clear-headed instead of groggy. You set the time you have to be up and how early it may wake you; RemWake spends that window watching for a moment when you are already stirring, and if none comes it rings at your set time, so you cannot oversleep. It runs on an iPhone alone, on an Apple Watch alone, or on both together, and it can wake you with a buzz on the wrist rather than a noise. Sleep data is processed on the device and there is no account to create. RemWake was built by solo developer Jamie Farrell and is free on the App Store; a Premium subscription adds sleep history, Trends, longer wake windows and CSV export.
Apple Watch tracks sleep stages in detail, but Apple's own alarm still rings at a fixed time; there is no smart wake anywhere in the system. RemWake fills that gap. It reads heart rate and movement to find a moment when you are already surfacing, wakes you then, and falls back to a guaranteed alarm at your set time if no such moment appears. On Apple Watch it sleeps until the window opens and only senses for the last half hour, which keeps the battery cost small; on iPhone it can read movement across the whole night from the mattress. Run both and they hand off to each other, so you get a long window and still wake to a buzz rather than a noise.
The reason timing matters is sleep inertia: the grogginess after waking, which typically lasts 15–60 minutes and depends heavily on which sleep stage the alarm interrupts. In one study, people woken from deep sleep showed around a 41% drop in performance, while those woken from light sleep performed about as well as people who were already awake.
Why Apple tracks sleep but won't smart-wake you, and how third-party apps work around the fact that Apple's on-watch sleep classifier is a private system process no app can read in real time.
A health app with nothing in its App Store privacy label and no account to create. Sleep data is processed on the device; the one thing that can ever be uploaded is an anonymised night, and only if the user switches that on themselves.
Silent wrist-only wake, where haptics wake one person and the other sleeps through it.
